This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences provides $299,306 to the University of Rhode Island for science verification activities for the 6500m human occupied vehicle (HOV) Alvin. The award period is from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022.
The funding supports basic research within the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), which aims to expand understanding of the integrated Earth system through atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences. Specifically, the award enables verification activities for the HOV Alvin to strengthen ocean science capabilities. Operations will be conducted out of Point Judith, Rhode Island, allowing researchers to conduct deep-sea exploration and verification dives to maximize scientific return from the submersible.
