Project Grant 2129252
- The National Science Foundation's (NSF) Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) awarded a $288,448 Project Grant to Oregon State University to conduct collaborative research on using X-ray tomography to characterize the microstructure of sea ice during stress tests. The goal is to develop multiscale numerical models that link the micromechanics of sea ice to its macroscopic behavior, which is critical for improving Arctic navigation, infrastructure design, and climate adaptation strategies. This research...
- This $325,213 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Division of Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) to The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York will investigate the role of meltwater in governing the geophysical properties of deforming icy systems. The project aims to create new flow laws that explicitly incorporate the effects of meltwater on ice flow, which is a key factor in modeling glacial mass loss and sea level rise. The research will employ...
- This $254,639 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs, under the Polar Programs federal grant program (CFDA 47.078), will fund research to advance paleoclimate reconstruction techniques using thin or disturbed ice core sections. The University of Washington will develop new instrumentation and data workflows at the National Science Foundation Ice Core Facility to investigate sub-centimeter chemical and physical variations in polar ice cores. Researchers will...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) will provide $922,103 to Dartmouth College to characterize the thermomechanics of subglacial systems and improve understanding of how water moves beneath glaciers and ice sheets. The research aims to resolve discrepancies between observations and existing subglacial hydrology models by incorporating subglacial thermomechanics, particularly the process of ice infiltration into sediments. The project...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (CFDA 47.078) Polar Programs supports research to investigate the movement of water at the ice-bed interface of glaciers and ice sheets. The $780,179 award, spanning September 1, 2025 to August 31, 2028, will utilize a combination of laboratory experiments and theoretical modeling to (1) derive a model of distributed water flow in the bed-till aperture and within the till, (2) analyze the conditions that determine whether...
- This $354,576 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) will fund a postdoctoral research project at Cornell University to investigate the potential impacts of brine firn aquifers on the stability of Antarctic ice shelves. The project aims to: (1) map the extent of brine aquifers across Antarctic ice shelves using airborne ice-penetrating radar data; (2) estimate the liquid water volume in these aquifers; (3) determine how seawater infiltrates the...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs awarded a $200,000 Project Grant to Iowa State University under the Polar Programs federal grant program (CFDA 47.078) on November 15, 2022. The grant will support assessment of damage and recovery efforts for power and road infrastructure in Western Alaska following Ex-Typhoon Merbok in September 2022. Iowa State University will conduct field investigations and studies through October 31, 2023 to evaluate impacts on civil infrastructure...
- This $400,757 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's Division of Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078 - Polar Programs) to the University of Wisconsin-Madison will fund a research project to determine the fundamental processes that control the geometry of subglacial cavities formed as glaciers slide over bedrock. The research will use a novel experimental device to systematically assess how factors like effective stress, sliding speed, and bedrock bump geometry affect cavity...
- This $191,868 National Science Foundation project grant supports research to understand surface-to-bed meltwater pathways across the Greenland Ice Sheet. Funded through the Polar Programs grant program (CFDA 47.078), the award will utilize machine learning and physics-based models to map cracks and draining lakes on the ice sheet from satellite imagery. Researchers at the University of Kansas Center for Research will develop open-source artificial intelligence codes to automatically detect ice...
- This $700,962 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) will fund a collaborative research study on how meltwater from surface channels affects the subglacial drainage system beneath Greenland's glaciers. The investigators will conduct a field study using seismic sensors, radar, and ice movement measurements to track the evolution of underground drainage cavities and how their connectivity impacts seasonal changes in ice velocity. The research builds...
This National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs Project Grant, totaling $241,139, will fund research from March 1, 2022 to February 29, 2024 to better understand the hydraulic permeability of temperate ice. Iowa State University will conduct laboratory and field experiments to measure, for the first time, the permeability of temperate ice as a function of grain size, water content, and foliation. In the laboratory, experiments will examine how grain size and water content affect permeability in controlled ice samples. Field experiments will evaluate the effect of ice foliation style and orientation on permeability by testing shallow core samples from Athabasca Glacier, Alberta. The research aims to provide empirically-grounded permeability models that can improve estimates of water content in shear margins of ice streams and models of ice softening and flow kinematics in these regions. The award supports the goals of the NSF Polar Programs CFDA 47.078 to strengthen understanding of polar regions through basic research best conducted in or specific to the polar environments.
