This three-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation, worth $393,552, will fund collaborative research on comparative taphonomy and time-averaging of mollusk-echinoid assemblages using high-performance radiocarbon dating at the University of Florida from September 2021 through August 2024. The research aims to strengthen understanding of the integrated Earth system through basic research in the atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences, as outlined in the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) of the NSF. Specifically, the University of Florida will conduct research comparing how mollusk and echinoid fossils are preserved and dated over time in sediments using advanced radiocarbon techniques, to better understand patterns in fossil assemblages. This has the potential to provide new insights into Earth's environmental history by more accurately dating when species lived.
