The National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences awarded a $297,690 project grant to the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) to conduct research titled "Collaborative Research: Metabolic Habitat Barriers Imposed on Tropical Diel Vertical Migrators" from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2024.
Under this award, BIOS will investigate how metabolic constraints impact the daily vertical movements of organisms in tropical oceans. This research aims to expand understanding of the integrated Earth system, as outlined under the NSF's Geosciences program (CFDA #47.050). The program supports basic research in atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences. Findings from BIOS's study of metabolic barriers influencing organisms' daily migrations will strengthen knowledge of interactions within the ocean environment. Field work will be conducted by BIOS researchers in Bermuda waters.
