The National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences awarded a $304,714 Project Grant to Michigan State University for the period of January 1, 2022 through December 31, 2023. The grant supports the development and application of the foraminiferal iodine/calcium paleoredox proxy to strengthen understanding of the integrated Earth system, as described under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050).
Specifically, the funding will allow Michigan State University to conduct research utilizing the foraminiferal iodine/calcium ratio as a proxy for paleoredox conditions. This work aims to expand fundamental knowledge of ocean redox conditions over geologic timeframes. It will provide insights into how Earth's atmospheric and oceanic systems have interacted in the past, advancing the Geosciences program's goal of increased understanding of the integrated Earth system through basic research.
