North Carolina State University received a $1,095,532 project grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Information and Intelligent Systems on September 1, 2021 to develop wearable multi-modal sensing and stimulation arrays for muscle-aware exoskeleton control. The award is funded through the NSF's Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA #47.070), which supports investigator-initiated research and education in computing, communications, and information science and engineering. Under the award, NC State researchers will advance the development and use of research cyberinfrastructure to enable and accelerate discovery and innovation in these areas. Specifically, the University will create wearable sensor and stimulator arrays integrated with exoskeleton systems to provide enhanced awareness of human muscle activity for improved control and user experience. The project aims to leverage multi-modal sensing and stimulation to inform more natural control of assistive devices. Work will be completed by August 31, 2025.
