The Regents of the University of California at Riverside will use a $510,732 National Science Foundation Project Grant in the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to understand Southern Ocean heat uptake and redistribution in a warming climate from September 2021 through August 2024. As part of its mission to strengthen the national scientific enterprise through expanding fundamental knowledge of the integrated Earth system, this NSF grant will support basic research examining how the Southern Ocean absorbs and redistributes heat throughout the global ocean system and how this process may change as climate warming continues. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of heat uptake and transport mechanisms in this climatically important region will provide insight into future ocean conditions and climate impacts.
