The University of Florida was awarded a $128,542 three-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences under the Geosciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.050). The grant will support collaborative research to explore the dynamic interaction between pyrogenic carbon and extracellular enzymes and its impacts on organic matter cycling in fire-impacted environments. The research is expected to strengthen fundamental scientific understanding of the integrated Earth system through increased knowledge of atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences as described in the program objectives. Field work will be conducted in Gainesville, Florida from July 2021 through June 2024 to examine how pyrogenic carbon produced by fires interacts with enzymes in soil and impacts organic matter breakdown and nutrient cycling. Insights gained from this research could provide new perspectives on carbon and nutrient dynamics in fire-prone ecosystems.
