This National Science Foundation Division of Industrial Innovation Project Grant awarded $256,000 to Grain Weevil Corporation of Aurora, Nebraska to develop a remote-controlled grain management and extraction robot. The 11-month project, which runs from March 2022 through December 2022, seeks to demonstrate the technical feasibility of a mobile robot for improving farmer safety and grain storage efficiencies. Key deliverables include classifying grain surface variables that impact robotic effectiveness, identifying top grain management tasks, analyzing grain characteristics' impacts on each task, and defining potential engagement paths for priority use cases. The research is also intended to quantify performance requirements, identify potential failure modes, and lay the groundwork for autonomous robot operations and a safe robot platform for use in grain bins. If successful, the $256k SBIR Phase I award has the potential to enhance post-harvest workflows in the agriculture industry and better achieve the National Science Foundation's Engineering directorate's goals of fostering innovation and excellence in engineering research.
