The University of Wisconsin-Madison was awarded a $470,557 project grant from the National Science Foundation Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences to conduct research on Galactic gamma-ray astrophysics with the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory. The grant, issued under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049), will support research activities from September 2021 through August 2024.
The project aims to advance understanding of major astrophysical problems through gamma-ray observations with HAWC, a ground-based observatory designed to study cosmic rays and gamma rays in the energy range from 100 GeV to 100 TeV. Insights gained from this research could enhance knowledge of particle acceleration and high-energy processes in the universe. The University of Wisconsin System will oversee delivery of the research products and services through its Division in Madison, Wisconsin.
