The University of Illinois was awarded a three-year, $360,970 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences to conduct research titled "Collaborative Research: Isotopic Fingerprinting of Nitrous Oxide Emissions from the United States Corn Belt." The grant is part of the NSF's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), which supports basic research in the atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences to strengthen understanding of the integrated Earth system. Under the award, the University will collaborate with researchers to analyze the isotopic composition of nitrous oxide emissions from corn fields across the Corn Belt region, in order to better trace the sources and processes responsible for agricultural nitrous oxide emissions in the key agricultural area. The research will provide insights to help mitigate rising atmospheric nitrous oxide levels through 2024.
