This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program provides $540,000 to Yale University from July 2022 through June 2025 to develop optically levitated microspheres as new tools for precision searches beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. The grantee will improve the sensitivity of optomechanical sensor arrays and extend them to search for interactions from dark matter and deviations from expected Standard Model forces at the microscopic scale. Through this work, graduate students and postdocs will gain training in high-precision sensing technologies while also providing related educational opportunities to local students. This award aims to advance fundamental understanding of physics through development of an innovative sensing technique with the potential to reveal new fundamental particles or interactions not described by current theories.
