The Colorado School of Mines received a three-year, $455,655 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Chemistry under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049). The grant funds research from September 2021 through August 2024 to elucidate mechanisms of perfluoroalkyl substance degradation in the environment through a coupled computational and experimental approach. The Mathematical and Physical Sciences program aims to advance scientific knowledge and understanding in core disciplines to strengthen the Nation's research enterprise. This award will further those goals by supporting research into understanding and modeling the breakdown of perfluorinated compounds, which have widespread environmental contamination applications but unknown impacts on human and ecosystem health.
