The University of Maryland, College Park will conduct the project "NEUTRINO GEOSCIENCE: GEONEUTRINOS AND HEAT PRODUCTION IN THE EARTH" under a $340,499 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The three-year award beginning May 1, 2021 will support basic research to strengthen understanding of the integrated Earth system through measuring geoneutrinos and heat production within the Earth. Researchers will work to expand fundamental knowledge of the planet's interior processes by studying geoneutrinos, which are anti-neutrinos produced by radioactive decays of uranium and thorium within the Earth. Outcomes will enhance knowledge of Earth's energy budget and composition.
