Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey was awarded a $298,762 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences under the Geosciences federal grant program (CFDA #47.050). The three-year award, beginning May 1, 2021 through April 30, 2024, will support the research project "Quantifying the Properties of Atmospheric Trace Elements and Their Fluxes to the Amundsen Sea." As described under the Geosciences program, the funding will strengthen understanding of the integrated Earth system through basic research in atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences. Specifically, the Rutgers project will conduct research to quantify trace element properties and fluxes in the atmosphere over the Amundsen Sea region of Antarctica, advancing knowledge of biogeochemical cycles in the Southern Ocean and interactions between the atmosphere, ocean, and sea ice.
