The University of California San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography will receive $363,261 under a three-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs. The grant will fund collaborative research titled "Peripheral East Antarctic Ice as a Unique Recorder of Climate Variability During the Last Interglacial" from August 2021 through July 2024. The research aims to strengthen understanding of polar regions by expanding knowledge of climate variability through studying ice cores from the periphery of East Antarctica. Specifically, the project will analyze ice cores to develop a high-resolution record of climate conditions during the last interglacial period approximately 125,000 years ago. Insights gained from this research may enhance climate modeling efforts by providing detailed data on natural climate fluctuations prior to significant human impacts. The funding is provided through the NSF's Polar Programs (CFDA #47.078) to encourage basic research conducted in polar regions.
