Northeastern University was awarded a $500,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Electrical, Communications and Cyber Systems. The grant is part of the NSF Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to support the research project "CAREER: GIANT TUNABILITY THROUGH PIEZOELECTRIC RESONANT ACOUSTIC METAMATERIALS FOR RADIO FREQUENCY ADAPTIVE INTEGRATED ELECTRONICS" being conducted from February 2021 through January 2026.
Under this award, Northeastern University researchers will develop new piezoelectric resonant acoustic metamaterials with giant tunability to enable radio frequency adaptive integrated electronics. The metamaterials under development aim to provide adaptive control of electromagnetic waves at radio frequencies using mechanical actuation, with potential applications in reconfigurable antennas and frequency-agile devices. The award supports this five-year research project advancing tunable metamaterials through the NSF's Engineering program goals of fostering innovation in engineering research.
