The project will combine pesticide use with complementary practices including non-crop host weed management, resistant cultivar selection, and biological control to...
- The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded a Cooperative Agreement to the University of Florida Division of Sponsored Research for $107,229, obligated on September 1, 2026, to develop science-based pest management practices controlling the two-spot cotton leafhopper (Amrasca biguttula), an invasive pest affecting tropical hibiscus nursery production in Florida. The award runs through August 31, 2027. The project delivers research-based control strategies for...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Louisiana State University Agricultural Center $499,834 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) on September 1, 2026. The award funds development and delivery of integrated pest management strategies for the invasive two-spot cotton leafhopper, which has recently expanded into the Southeast and Midsouth U.S., causing yield and revenue losses in cotton, horticultural crops, and ornamentals....
- The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded the University of Florida Division of Sponsored Research a $101,727 Cooperative Agreement on September 1, 2026, to improve management of Amrasca biguttula and reduce crop losses from this pest in Florida and Puerto Rico. Work is performed in Florida under the award period September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2027. The University of Florida serves as the recipient organization administering the award through its...
- The Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded the University of Florida a $104,448 cooperative agreement on July 15, 2026 to identify natural enemies of the cotton jassid (Amrasca biguttula) in South Florida and assess their potential as biological control agents for this national priority pest. The recipient will determine the identification, abundance, and population dynamics of natural enemy and cotton jassid populations on preferred host crops—eggplant...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Florida Division of Sponsored Research $299,319 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on May 1, 2026. The project identifies bee diversity within pollinator-independent cropping systems (cotton, peanut, and soybean) in the Southeast, evaluates foraging preferences of bee species visiting crop flowers, assesses nutritional profiles of floral resources, and models potential...
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service has awarded a Cooperative Agreement to the University of Florida (UF) totaling $200,000.00 for the period of September 1, 2023 to August 31, 2028. The funding is provided under the USDA's Agricultural Research Basic and Applied Research program (CFDA 10.001) to support research and services for the "Integrated Pest Management of Invasive Pests for Subtropical Agriculture in Florida." As a leading research...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Florida $4,010,850 on July 1, 2026, under the Specialty Crop Research Initiative (CFDA 10.309) to develop detection methods, characterize epidemiology, and implement mitigation strategies for Neopestalotiopsis pathogen in strawberry transplant production systems. The award funds coordinated research and outreach to address an emergent pathogen that has spread across multiple U.S. states and...
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service awarded the Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services a cooperative agreement valued at $222,910 on September 15, 2026, to conduct statewide exotic pest surveys under the agency's plant health mission. The recipient will deploy 220 pheromone traps and conduct visual surveys across 120 individual site locations throughout Florida to detect tomato leafminer (Phthorimea absoluta) and old world bollworm...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Florida Division of Sponsored Research $591,242 on March 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) to document and analyze citrus farmland loss in Florida over the past 15 years. The project delivers three primary research products: a parcel-level spatial-temporal assessment of citrus land loss using high-resolution geospatial data and big data analytics; an economic...
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Florida $499,712 on September 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310) to conduct rapid-response research on the two-spot cotton leafhopper, an invasive pest that has spread across the Caribbean, Central America, and into multiple U.S. states since its first detection in Puerto Rico in 2023. The project addresses four research objectives: identifying host range, damage, and population changes through farm surveys and weed sampling in Florida and Georgia; investigating dispersal and spatial distribution in laboratory and field conditions; assessing leafhopper preference and performance across commercially available eggplant and okra varieties; and evaluating the efficacy of organic bioinsecticides under field conditions. The leafhopper causes hopperburn, defoliation, stunting, premature fruit drop, and yield losses exceeding 50 percent in okra and 37 percent in eggplant, with a host range that includes okra, eggplant, roselle, pepper, tomato, and ornamentals such as hibiscus. The University of Florida Division of Sponsored Research administers the award with place of performance in Gainesville, Florida. The period of performance runs from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2028. Extension and outreach activities will train agents and disseminate findings through workshops, blogs, extension documents, and direct engagement with growers to support integrated pest management strategies and regional risk assessments for this emerging invasive pest.
