Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Missouri System received a $727,995 Project Grant from the Institute of Bioenergy, Climate, and Environment under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) program, effective January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2029. The grant funds research to engineer catechyl (C)-lignin content in soybean hulls, converting this low-value agricultural byproduct into a valuable feedstock for sustainable manufacturing. C-lignin is an aromatic polymer with a homogeneous structure that can be depolymerized into catechol derivatives—platform chemicals used to produce advanced materials including carbon nanofibers, graphene, and bioplastics. Currently, natural C-lignin sources are limited, constraining commercial development of these applications. The project deliverables include optimization of C-lignin extraction and depolymerization processes from soybean hulls, scaling up production methodologies, and conducting techno-economic analysis (TEA) to assess the feasibility of integrating C-lignin production into the domestic soybean oil manufacturing supply chain. By converting soybean hulls—a byproduct of U.S. soybean oil production—into a high-value material, the research addresses the feedstock availability constraint while creating additional economic value for one of the nation's largest agricultural commodities. The work is being conducted at the University of Missouri's Columbia, Missouri research facilities.
