Project Grant 20266701946580
- South Dakota State University received a $650,000 project grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310), awarded September 1, 2025, with completion targeted for August 31, 2030. The project addresses critical gaps in bison production by establishing a comprehensive producer network to facilitate knowledge sharing regarding animal health, management practices, and disease...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded South Dakota State University $300,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on September 15, 2026, to evaluate sorghum genetics and physiology across developmental stages and environmental conditions in the Northern Great Plains. The project addresses limitations to sorghum adoption in northern regions, including shortened growing seasons, delayed canopy closure, and weed-management...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded South Dakota State University $1,874,433 under the Payments to Agricultural Experiment Stations Under the Hatch Act (CFDA 10.203) on October 1, 2025. The award funds integrated agricultural research organized around crop and soil systems, livestock and meat systems, and dairy and food science. Crop and soil systems work advances breeding and genetics for stress tolerance and pest resistance; develops rapid...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Iowa State University of Science and Technology $749,328 on September 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to study the effectiveness of prairie strips—native habitat patches planted within corn and soybean fields—in supporting native bee and managed honeybee populations while sustaining agronomic benefits to farmers. The project addresses three knowledge gaps: whether...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of North Texas Research and Innovation Division $750,000 on August 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to conduct comparative research on grazing management practices and their effects on rangeland health. The project tests the hypothesis that adaptive multi-paddock (AMP) grazing—a management approach involving frequent livestock rotation through small...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded North Dakota State University $331,974 under the Cooperative Forestry Research program (CFDA 10.202) on October 1, 2025, to identify, propagate, and evaluate tree and shrub species for adaptation to the Northern Great Plains and North Dakota rangelands. Research will assess winter hardiness, pest resistance, drought tolerance, and performance on alkaline and saline soils under desiccating wind regimes, with...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $180,000 to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro on May 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) to support predoctoral research on rangeland ecosystem sustainability and cattle production. The project, conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Sally Koerner at UNC-G, addresses the long-term sustainability of cattle production and rangeland ecosystems. Managed rangeland...
- This $1,997,154 federal Project Grant award, provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) under the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (CFDA 10.912), aims to support bison producers in the Great Plains region by utilizing bison as a sustainable grazer and implementing winter bale grazing techniques. The award, with a performance period from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2027, will be administered by South Dakota State University (SDSU), a...
- The National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded South Dakota State University $7,785,401.50 under the Smith-Lever Extension Funding program (CFDA 10.511) on October 1, 2025, as a formula grant to support cooperative extension activities. SDSU Extension delivers unbiased scientific knowledge and innovation across South Dakota through five critical focus areas: families, youth, and communities; food systems, nutrition, health, and well-being; regenerative agronomic systems; regenerative...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded South Dakota State University $4,859,438 under the Hatch Act formula grant program (CFDA 10.203) on October 1, 2025. The award funds integrated, field-tested agricultural research translated to producer-ready decisions across crop and soil systems, livestock and meat systems, and dairy and food processing. Crop and soil systems work advances breeding and genetics for stress tolerance and pest resistance; develops...
The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded South Dakota State University $750,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on August 1, 2026. The recipient will investigate grazing management strategies that enable cattle production to coexist with healthy plant communities, abundant pollinators, and resilient ecosystem services on working rangelands in the Northern Great Plains. The project will examine the nutritional value of forbs and shrubs within beef cattle diets and how diet selection changes under different grazing practices, and will uncover how wild pollinator communities interact with and use forbs and shrubs under different grazing management regimes. Expected outputs include science-based guidance for producers, land managers, and conservation partners on maintaining or enhancing flowering plants that benefit livestock and pollinators while reducing unintended losses of grassland biodiversity across South Dakota and Nebraska. The work addresses rapid conversion of temperate grasslands to cropland, invasion by non-native grasses, and losses of native plant and pollinator diversity in privately owned, actively grazed rangelands. Performance runs from August 1, 2026 through July 31, 2029 and takes place in Brookings, South Dakota.
