This $1,500,000 federal Project Grant award was provided by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The award will support research, education, and extension activities to enhance nutrition capacity and advance nutrition security in the U.S. Affiliated Pacific Region (USAPR). Key objectives include: Collecting measured data on obesity, dietary intake, and physical activity for Native Hawaiian, Native Alaskan, and Pacific Islander populations, which are currently lacking in national surveys. Analyzing the nutritional composition of Pacific foods that are not represented in national food composition databases. Coordinating extension, education, and research efforts to provide more targeted dietary guidance and reduce diet-related chronic diseases in the region. The 5-year project will be led by the University of Hawaii and is expected to run from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2029. This work aims to improve rural economies, increase food production, and train the next generation of the agricultural workforce in the USAPR.
