The Salish Kootenai College, Inc. received a $200,000 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Cooperative Extension Service (CFDA 10.500) program. The "Climate Smart Agriculture and Indigenous Knowledge Integration Project (CSAIKI)" aims to promote food security, empower youth entrepreneurship, and facilitate climate-smart agricultural practices among the Salish, Kootenai, and Pend d'Oreille tribes. The project will integrate traditional indigenous agricultural knowledge with modern climate-smart farming techniques through hands-on training, community workshops, and the establishment of demonstration gardens and family gardens. The initiative also engages tribal youth through internships, podcasting, and peer-led educational activities to foster entrepreneurship and community cohesion. The long-term goal is to create a climate-smart agricultural framework that preserves traditional ecological knowledge while promoting food security and economic opportunities for the tribal communities. The award period is from Jan 15, 2025 to Jan 14, 2027.
