This Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) under the Higher Education Challenge Grants Program (CFDA 10.217) aims to develop a new approach to teaching forest health across the curriculum for natural resources majors and non-majors at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech), a land-grant university. The $146,796 award supports the following key objectives: 1) developing a new course focused on forest health and ecosystem resiliency, 2) developing a new course on environmental conservation and society that includes forest health content, 3) modifying four existing courses to incorporate new forest health lecture material and laboratory experiences, and 4) creating a curriculum development community focused on forest health. To achieve these goals, faculty will participate in three summer workshops to gain expertise, develop teaching materials, and evaluate the curriculum development community experience. The new and revised courses will be taught, and student learning will be assessed through pre- and post-surveys. Evaluation results will be used to refine the curriculum and continue improving forest health education at Virginia Tech. This project aims to prepare students with the skills and training needed to successfully manage the nation's forests upon entering the workforce.
