The Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech) received a $241,000 project grant award from the US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Higher Education National Needs Graduate Fellowship Grants program (CFDA 10.210). The five-year project seeks to establish an innovative graduate training framework in commodity markets through integrating traditional classroom learning with participation in a nearly $1 million student-managed commodity investment fund. Students directly apply concepts learned in the classroom to real-life trading experience through the fund, developing valuable problem-solving, decision-making, presentation, communication, leadership, and management skills. The multidisciplinary nature of the program allows students to benefit from networking and enriching one another. Evaluation shows graduates are uniquely trained to meet future needs in the globally connected, technologically advanced, and stakeholder-driven food and agriculture industry.
