This $300,000 federal Project Grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) will fund a research project at Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service to investigate how past land management practices, such as mowing, grazing, and prescribed burns, influence wildfire behavior and ecosystem resilience on rangelands. The overarching goal is to develop improved strategies for mitigating wildfire risk and promoting rangeland health. The research will include analyzing data from the 2024 Panhandle wildfires, conducting field experiments, and creating predictive models to understand the complex interactions between management and fire. The anticipated outcomes include new insights to guide future land management decisions and help protect lives, property, and natural resources from wildfires. This work will be supported by the Texas A&M University System's administrative and research capabilities.
