This $225,000 federal Project Grant awarded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program will support research by Boise State University to understand the social and ecological factors influencing the implementation of targeted grazing as a land management tool on U.S. Forest Service lands in the western United States. The research will involve surveys of USFS staff and livestock producers to assess attitudes, preferences, and constraints related to targeted grazing, as well as integrating this data with biophysical information to develop context-specific strategies for implementing targeted grazing as an adaptive management approach. The findings are expected to provide actionable results to support policymakers, land managers, and livestock producers in effectively utilizing targeted grazing to manage invasive weeds and wildfire risk on public lands. The grant has a period of performance from June 1, 2024 to May 31, 2026.
