The SURFFS-UP program at Chapman University is a five-year, $520,450 Project Grant awarded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The goal of the program is to provide experiential food science learning opportunities for a total of 30 underrepresented undergraduate students through an 8-week intensive summer research experience. Key objectives include increasing involvement of underrepresented students from minority-serving institutions, developing leadership and critical thinking skills, and promoting awareness of food science careers. Students will work with faculty mentors on hypothesis-based research projects and present their findings, as well as participate in professional development seminars and site visits to food laboratories and plants. This project grant aims to create a pipeline of future professionals in the growing and under-staffed food industry by empowering underrepresented students to pursue graduate studies and careers in food science and related fields.
