This $650,000 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program supports the development of a large-scale, spatially explicit Integrated Hydro-Economic Agricultural Land Use (IHEAL) model. The model combines a multi-commodity partial equilibrium market formulation with a process-based Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to examine the interdependencies between crop production and water quality and quantity, with a focus on nutrient runoff management. The project, led by the West Virginia University Research Corporation, will expand the existing IHEAL model to include additional crops, best management practices, and phosphorus use. This will enable analysis of the implications of nutrient runoff abatement policies on regional production, commodity prices, water quality, and irrigation demand. The project includes a sub-award to Texas A&M AgriLife Research to contribute to the integrated modeling and analysis. The award period runs from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2028.
