This $300,000 Project Grant awarded by the USDA's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) aims to demonstrate the feasibility of producing chirally pure (R)-3-hydroxybutyrate (R-3HB) from plant waste materials, such as wood and crop leftovers, by modifying Clostridium pathways. The research will create and test two different R-3HB production pathways in Clostridium, then combine and further optimize the approaches to boost R-3HB yields in the bacterium. If successful, this work could enable an efficient and sustainable process to create R-3HB, a versatile chemical compound used in biodegradable plastics, vitamins, and antibiotics, from agricultural waste. The project supports efforts to promote a sustainable bioeconomy and strengthen agriculture. Two sub-awards to the University of California, Davis totaling an undisclosed amount will support related research. One project will work towards biotransformation of paper mill sludge to produce value-added chirally pure (R)-1,3-butanediol, while the other focuses on biomanufacturing of (R)-3-hydroxybutyrate from lignocellulosic feedstocks through microbial engineering. These sub-projects leverage UC Davis's expertise in biotechnology, microbial processes, and sustainable chemical production.
