Project Grant 20246702143082
- This Project Grant award from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the Water Resources Research Act (WRRA) Program (CFDA 15.805) provides $620,000 in funding to Texas A&M AgriLife Research to evaluate the vulnerability of urban, agricultural, and ecological sectors in the Southern Ogallala Aquifer (SOA) region to drought and wildfires. The project aims to estimate the economic losses by sector and county, simulate crop yields and irrigation water usage under various management strategies,...
- This Project Grant award, totaling $499,681.45, was provided by the U.S. Geological Survey under the Assistance to State Water Resources Research Institutes program (CFDA 15.805). The project aims to quantify and project the water budget across the Contiguous United States (CONUS) using a hierarchical modeling framework. Key objectives include: Quantifying water budget components by leveraging hydrological experiments, applying machine learning algorithms to inform soil properties, and employing...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the Assistance to State Water Resources Research Institutes program (CFDA 15.805) provides $875,000 in funding to the Desert Research Institute (DRI) at the Nevada System of Higher Education. The key objectives are to: 1) integrate evapotranspiration (ET) water use estimates into national and regional hydrologic modeling, 2) advance open water evaporation estimation and system integration, 3) improve data processing,...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Texas A&M AgriLife Research received a $225,000 project grant awarded July 15, 2025, through the Institute of Bioenergy, Climate, and Environment under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI; CFDA 10.310). The two-year project, with a completion date of July 14, 2027, will deliver advanced satellite-based and ground-measurement research analyzing evapotranspiration (ET) and water use patterns across diverse Texas landscapes. The research will...
- This $430,230 federal Project Grant award from the U.S. Geological Survey under the Assistance to State Water Resources Research Institutes program (CFDA 15.805) will fund a 3-year research project at the University of Arizona to develop the next generation of U.S. water accounting and natural capital accounting methods. The key products and services to be delivered include: Spatially disaggregating USGS water use datasets from 2000-2015 into a high-resolution 30-meter raster data product...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $650,000 Project Grant under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA #47.084) program to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) - Office of Research Administration. The grant supports the development of a user-tailored irrigation water management decision-support hub focused on California's Central Valley. The project aims to provide individual growers with high-resolution, daily irrigation advice by integrating satellite...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Oklahoma State University received a $649,946 Project Grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), CFDA 10.310, effective May 1, 2026, through April 30, 2029. The project addresses declining groundwater levels in the Ogallala Aquifer across the Southern High Plains, which threatens long-term agricultural productivity and rural economies in Oklahoma and neighboring states. The research...
- This $621,463 federal Project Grant award from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the Assistance to State Water Resources Research Institutes (CFDA 15.805) program aims to improve national-scale estimates of poorly constrained water budget components. The award to Oregon State University (OSU) will leverage precipitation stable isotope data and hydrologic models to diagnose biases in evaporation and transpiration fluxes within advanced operational models. The project will focus on four...
- The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation awarded $1,975,000 to the Kansas Department of Agriculture on June 11, 2025, under the Colorado River System Conservation Pilot program (CFDA 15.567) to advance the Kansas Water Right Transition Assistance Program (WTAP). The WTAP is a voluntary, incentive-based program designed to retire privately held irrigation water rights through state compensation, with the primary objective of restoring aquifer levels and recovering stream flows in critically depleted...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (CFDA 47.075) program provides $300,000 to the University of Southern California (USC) to investigate how new technologies for water resource extraction, such as membrane-based filtration and retrofittable fermenters, can address anticipated challenges of water scarcity and resource insecurity. The project aims to develop conceptual tools for understanding resource extraction in a...
** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** WITH MORE FREQUENT AND SEVERE DROUGHTS AND A GROWING DEMAND FOR FOOD PRODUCTION, WATER SUPPLIES FOR AGRICULTURE ARE UNDER STRAIN IN THE SOUTHWEST (SW) AND SOUTHERN PLAINS (SP). AS A RESULT, AGRICULTURAL PRODUCERS FACE A FUTURE OF BEING ASKED TO DO MORE WITH LESS WATER. THE OPENET SYSTEM, A SATELLITE-BASED EVAPOTRANSPIRATION (ET) DATA AND OPEN DATA SERVICE, PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY TO ACCELERATE THE USE OF DATA-DRIVEN MANAGEMENT. THE GOAL OF OUR PROPOSAL IS TO QUANTIFY FIELD TO BASIN-SCALE WATER NEEDS AND EVALUATE THE CONSERVED CONSUMPTIVE WATER USE FROM PREVIOUS WATER CONSERVATION INVESTMENTS. TO UNDERSTAND REALISTIC WATER SAVINGS FROM CONSERVATION INVESTMENTS ACROSS THE SW AND SP REGIONS, THIS PROJECT WILL ANSWER TIMELY AND RELEVANT QUESTIONS SUCH AS: HOW MUCH WATER IS NEEDED TO SUPPORT IRRIGATION WITHIN A GIVEN BASIN? WHAT CHANGES IN CONSUMPTIVE USE OF WATER HAVE RESULTED FROM PAST AND ONGOING INTERVENTIONS AND INVESTMENTS IN WATER CONSERVATION AND IRRIGATION EFFICIENCY?
