Project Grant 20246701542374
- This $800,000 project grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) federal grant program (CFDA 10.310), will support the validation of novel transcriptomic blood biomarkers of pain in cattle and swine. Kansas State University will work with the University of Adelaide to identify genetic markers in the blood of pigs and cattle that indicate the experience of pain after routine management procedures like tail docking and...
- This Project Grant award of $650,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) CFDA Program supports research to understand the welfare impacts of liver abscesses in feedlot cattle. The research aims to determine if liver abscesses cause pain and illness in cattle by evaluating physiological and behavioral outcomes. This will provide critical information needed to develop interventions...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) awarded a $648,620.00 Project Grant under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) to Kansas State University to examine the use of precision feeding strategies to improve the environmental and economic sustainability of beef production for small- and medium-sized feedlot producers. The key objectives are to evaluate animal performance, feed efficiency, enteric methane production, and...
- This $500,000 Project Grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program, will fund research at the University of California, Davis from July 2021 through June 2026 to alleviate acute and long-term pain experienced by dairy calves during disbudding. The objective is to evaluate using an ethanol nerve block of the cornual nerve combined with caustic paste application to numb the horn region, generating novel information...
- This $300,000 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program will fund research at the University of Wyoming to evaluate the relationships between beef steer activity levels, feed efficiency, and meat quality. The project aims to determine if accelerometer data on total steps and mounting behavior correlates with feed efficiency, flight speed, and meat quality...
- This Project Grant award for $300,000.00 was provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310). The objective is to identify plasma biomarkers indicative of heat stress resistance in lactating dairy cows and develop a statistical model utilizing the most influential metabolites to predict heat stress resistance. Over two years, the researchers will study 160 Holstein...
- The University of Nebraska received a $650,000 Project Grant under the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The award will fund a 4-year research study to investigate strategies for minimizing the impact of heat stress on the health, growth, and welfare of high-fat finishing livestock. Specifically, the researchers will test the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory dietary compounds in reducing inflammation and associated losses in...
- This Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program, CFDA 10.310, provides $196,120.90 to North Dakota State University to determine optimal allostatic load indexes for predicting heat stress resiliency in feedlot sheep and cattle. The research project aims to correlate candidate biomarker indexes with performance outcomes in finishing lambs and beef steers...
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) awarded a $650,000 Project Grant under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) to Kansas State University. The funding will support a 5-year effort to collect gas flux data on grazing beef cows to develop a prototype genetic evaluation system for improving methane production and metabolic rate in beef cattle. The research aims to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of beef production...
- This federal Project Grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program provides $300,000 to the University of Nebraska to develop and test a skill assessment tool for scoring animal handler skill levels. The objectives are to investigate the relationship between self-reported handler experience, expert-scored skill level, and animal behavior, as well as the relationship between years of experience,...
This Project Grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) CFDA 10.310 program provides $650,000 to Kansas State University (KSU) to conduct research on assessing pain and heat stress in beef cattle. The key objectives of the project are to: 1) Optimize and validate a Bovine Rate of Consumption Index (BROCI) as an objective measure of acute pain and the efficacy of pain relief drugs after surgical castration in calves; 2) Compare the impacts of surgical and non-surgical castration methods, as well as novel anesthetic and pain relief treatments, on BROCI; and 3) Optimize and validate BROCI to assess the impacts of heat stress events on beef calf welfare. This research aims to develop innovative, automated, and non-invasive methods to monitor how cattle cope with pain and thermal stress. The award period is from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2027. KSU has also issued a $250,188 sub-award to Irvine Ranch, LLC to support this research.
