The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture received a $791,037 project grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The funding will support research, education, and extension efforts to identify and characterize genetic sources of resistance to the Southern root-knot nematode (SRKN) in soybeans. Key objectives include: 1) identifying the major resistance gene on the Rmi1 locus and elucidating its resistance mechanisms, 2) screening for novel genetic resistance sources, and 3) developing soybean breeding populations with stacked resistance traits. This work aims to provide soybean growers with cultivars that have a broader, more durable genetic basis for resisting yield losses caused by this major plant-parasitic nematode. The project will be conducted at the University of Arkansas over a 3-year period from September 2024 to August 2027.
