Principal Investigator Dr. Michael Schlüppi and co-PIs Dr. Georgia Eizenga of the USDA Agricultural Research Service and Dr. Jeremy Edwards will utilize rice diversity panels and mapping populations to identify genetic...
- The University of Arkansas, Fayetteville Division, was awarded a $300,000 Project Grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The grant project, awarded on July 1, 2024, with a completion date of June 30, 2026, aims to investigate the variation in volatile and non-volatile profiles across a variety of rice cultivars from U.S. breeding programs, the USDA-ARS world rice collection, and genetically...
- The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) within the United States Department of Agriculture awarded a $10,000,000 Project Grant under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) federal grant program to the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center (LSU Agricultural Center) on April 1, 2023 with a projected completion date of March 31, 2027. The grant aims to develop climate-resilient innovations to sustainably produce rice in the southern U.S. through a multi-state,...
- This three-year, $649,999 project grant from the US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA #10.310) program will fund research at Texas Tech University to develop new rice cultivars with robust yield under saline and water-limited environments. The project will utilize transgressive segregation in advanced generation progenies of a cross between indica and aus rice varieties to identify genotypes exhibiting...
- This $180,000 Project Grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program supports research by the Regents of the University of California at Riverside to identify and re-engineer genes involved in environmental stress tolerance in plants. The goal is to cultivate higher-yielding, climate-resilient crop varieties that can sustainably meet the food demands of a growing...
- This Project Grant award, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agricultural Genome to Phenome Initiative (CFDA 10.332), provides $901,524 to Texas A&M AgriLife Research to develop a digital rice breeding platform. The key objectives are to: 1) integrate and validate genomic selection for improving main and ratoon crop yield and quality in rice, 2) develop a cost-effective marker panel for genomic selection, 3) establish an...
- This $270,244 Project Grant awarded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program supports a research project conducted by South Dakota State University (SDSU) to improve heat tolerance in wheat. The key objectives are to: 1) Create novel variations in the Rubisco activase 2 (RCA2) gene to enhance thermostability, 2) Evaluate the impact of these mutations on photosynthetic efficiency and heat tolerance, and 3)...
- The Cornell University Office of Sponsored Programs received a three-year, $648,068 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) competitive grants program (CFDA #10.310). The grant will fund research to gain a further understanding of chilling tolerance mechanisms in crop plants through the study of a rice casein kinase gene (CTK1) and its natural variants in both rice...
The Division of Agriculture of the University of Arkansas received a $585,650 Project Grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The objective of this 4-year award is to identify genes and quantitative trait loci (QTLs) that confer tolerance to high nighttime temperatures (HNT) in rice, which can significantly impact yield and quality. The researchers will use genome-wide association studies and QTL mapping to tag these HNT tolerance genes/QTLs and develop DNA markers for use in rice breeding programs. They will then screen and evaluate advanced rice lines for HNT tolerance, as well as other agronomic and grain quality characteristics, to develop improved germplasm and/or cultivars for rice producers. Additionally, the gene editing approach will help elucidate the mechanisms underlying a known QTL associated with grain chalk, which impacts appearance, cooking, and palatability. Overall, this project aims to provide rice breeders and growers with new genetic resources and varieties better adapted to the rising nighttime temperatures impacting key rice production regions in the United States.
