The Regents of the University of Minnesota, awarded $218,000.00 under a Project Grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310), will develop a comprehensive genetic "pangenome" encompassing 14 different horse breeds. This pangenome data structure will capture the full breadth of genetic diversity across horse breeds, enabling researchers to better understand the connections between genetic blueprints and important health, performance, and production traits in agricultural animals. The project will also create tools to allow researchers working on other animal species to develop their own pangenomes. This work aims to ultimately improve the scientific community's appreciation of how genetic factors influence diseases and traits in horses and other livestock.
