The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) received a $600,000 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the 1890 Institution Capacity Building Grants Program (CFDA 10.216). The project aims to demonstrate the environmental and production benefits of using sterile Miscanthus x giganteus as broiler bedding. Key activities include testing and applying novel technologies to reduce ammonia emissions, improve fertilizer value, and enhance plant protection, soil health, and litter composting for crop production. The project will also provide hands-on training for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as education for growers and crop producers, on the benefits and practices of using sterile Miscanthus x giganteus and composted litter for sustainable agriculture. This project aligns with NIFA's priorities in natural resources, animal health/production, environmental quality, climate change, and crop production/protection, and supports UMES's strategic plan as a historically Black, 1890 land-grant institution. The award period is from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2027.
