This $299,990 project grant awarded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the 1890 Institution Capacity Building Grants Program (CFDA 10.216) aims to evaluate the impact of replacing soybean meal with hempseed cake as a protein source in poultry feed. Through a series of feeding trials, the researchers at Lincoln University will assess the growth performance, feed efficiency, and carcass yields of fast-growing broilers, slow-growing broilers, and egg-type pullets when fed diets containing varying levels of hempseed cake as an alternative to soybean meal. The study will also analyze the cannabinoid content of the meat produced during the trials to address concerns about potential transfer to animal products. This research is intended to contribute to the body of knowledge needed to gain Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) approval for using hempseed cake as a poultry feed ingredient, which would benefit poultry producers and the hemp industry while promoting sustainable agriculture.
