The U.S. Department of Agriculture's 1890 Institution Capacity Building Grants Program awarded a $298,558 project grant to the West Virginia State University Research And Development Corporation (WVSU R&D). The 3-year grant, which begins on April 1, 2024, will support a multidisciplinary research project to investigate how combinations of chemical and hydrological stressors, as well as microbial diversity, impact riverine ecosystem processes and water quality in the Kanawha River watershed in West Virginia. The study will use analytical chemistry, microbial ecology, and other techniques to examine the effects of pollutants and hydrological factors on the carbon cycle and other aspects of river ecosystems. The research aims to build WVSU's capacity in environmental science and biotechnology, and will involve field measurements, laboratory experiments, and modeling to understand the complex interactions affecting river water quality. This project is part of the USDA's efforts to strengthen teaching, research, and extension programs at eligible 1890 land-grant institutions.
