The University of Arizona has been awarded a $250,000 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Higher Education Multicultural Scholars Grant Program (CFDA 10.220). The grant, titled "THE PATHWAYS INTO VETERINARY MEDICINE: A COMMUNITY COLLEGE ENTRY TO SUCCESS SCHOLARS (ACCESS) PROGRAM," aims to address the veterinarian shortage in Arizona by engaging community college students, particularly from rural, border, and tribal communities, and supporting their successful entry into the University of Arizona's Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program. The project will implement a series of virtual veterinary science workshops using augmented reality and 360-degree video technology to increase students' preparation and interest in veterinary sciences. Additionally, the grant will fund a summer intensive in-person program that provides hands-on clinical and professional skills development, as well as rigorous academic coursework, to build a competitive applicant pool of community college students for successful entry into veterinary sciences. The project period runs from September 1, 2024, to August 31, 2028.
