This Project Grant award of $247,471 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture Veterinary Services Grant Program (CFDA 10.336) will support the University of California, Davis in developing a framework for outreach to high school students to increase their interest in pursuing careers in livestock veterinary medicine. The key objectives are to create outreach materials that provide a positive and realistic portrayal of career opportunities in food animal medicine, as well as information on funding and scholarship options for veterinary school. The project will also expand internship opportunities for high school students at UC Davis' veterinary teaching and research center to give them hands-on exposure to the field. This work aims to grow the pool of applicants interested in food animal medicine at UC Davis and other veterinary schools, helping to address the shortage of veterinarians in this critical practice area.
