Texas A&M University-Kingsville will provide $20 million in products and services under a Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The grant is part of the From Learning to Leading: Cultivating the Next Generation of Diverse Food and Agriculture Professionals program (CFDA 10.237), which aims to increase equitable participation in USDA programs.

Specifically, the university will implement the Leading Hispanics to Federal Agency Employment initiative through 2028. This includes developing experiential learning, mentorship, and outreach projects to support 295 undergraduate students, 142 graduate students, and 800 high school students and teachers. The goal is to improve retention, graduation rates, and career placement of Hispanic students in food, agriculture, natural resources and human sciences careers at USDA agencies. Student support services include scholarships, symposiums, internships at 219 USDA sites, and engagement programs to prepare participants for federal employment opportunities. If successful, this model could be adopted by other higher education institutions.
