**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** IN 2022, THE U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY REVOKED ALL AGRICULTURAL REGISTRATIONS OF CHLORPYRIFOS. BECAUSE OF THESE REGULATORY DECISIONS, SWEETPOTATO GROWERS LOST THEIR MOST IMPORTANT INSECTICIDE TO COMBAT SOIL INSECT LOSSES. THIS CHANGE HAS DRIVEN AN INDUSTRY-WIDE SHIFT FROM CHLORPYRIFOS TO PRE-PLANT SPRAYS OF BIFENTHRIN (PYRETHROID) COMBINED WITH NEONICOTINOIDS. THESE APPLICATIONS ARE FOLLOWED BY WITH 2-3 BIFENTHRIN APPLICATIONS TO CONTROL ANNUAL WIREWORM SPECIES DURING THE GROWING SEASON. DESPITE MAXIMIZING PROPHYLACTIC BIFENTHRIN USE, GROWERS EXPERIENCED GREATER THAN EXPECTED SWEETPOTATO LOSSES IN 2022. THE LOSS OF CHLORPYRIFOS REPRESENTS A TIMELY OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP ALTERNATIVE IPM STRATEGIES FOR SOIL INSECT MANAGEMENT IN SWEETPOTATO. INFORMATION DEVELOPED BY THIS PROJECT WILL IDENTIFY LOCATIONS AT RISK FOR INFESTATION AND DAMAGE BASED ON THE LANDSCAPE SURROUNDING TARGET FIELDS. WE WILL LEVERAGE MONITORING TOOLS TO TEST DIFFERENT INSECTICIDE TIMINGS AND DELIVERIES TO HELP REDUCE PEST LOSSES IN THE ABSENCE OF CHLORPYRIFOS.
