The University of Wisconsin-Platteville received a $299,335 Project Grant award from the Department of Agriculture's Capacity Building for Non-Land Grant Colleges of Agriculture (NLGCA) program (CFDA 10.326). The objective is to develop the University's Pioneer Farms as a center for collaborative research on automated milking systems (AMS), focusing on topics such as precision nutrition, cow health, and environmental sustainability. Key activities include: Procuring a GreenFeed system to quantify individual cow greenhouse gas emissions like methane and carbon dioxide from the AMS herd. This will enable research on dairy production's impact on climate change. Conducting a novel AMS-enabled precision feeding experiment to evaluate the effects of different post-calving feeding strategies on cow productivity, health, nutrient efficiency, rumen fermentation, and greenhouse gas emissions. The preliminary data and GreenFeed capability from this 3-year project will support future funding proposals to further advance research on smart agricultural technologies and sustainable dairy farming practices.
