The University of Puerto Rico received a $423,000 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program. The grant will support the development and delivery of geospatial data science modules, research courses, and summer internships for Hispanic undergraduate students. Specifically, the University will create new course modules in geospatial data science related to agriculture and natural resources, develop and offer a research course applying these skills, and provide 25 summer internships at USDA, state agencies and the University. The project aims to enhance the geospatial data science skills and research experience of Hispanic students to prepare them for careers in agriculture, natural resources or graduate study. It is intended to strengthen research capacity while attracting and retaining Hispanic students in these fields. The period of performance is from August 1, 2023 through July 31, 2028.
