This $748,835 project grant from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA #10.310) will fund research into developing novel nano-enabled fertilizers to address challenges in sustainable global food production. The University of Texas at El Paso will explore using nanoscale manganese and iron species as fertilizers, with the goal of substantially improving crop yields beyond conventional fertilizers. Researchers will investigate the transport and effects of foliar- and seed-applied manganese and iron nanomaterials on four plant species, and evaluate their impacts on plant stress tolerance. Subawards of $TBD each were provided to the University of Rhode Island and Connecticut Agricultural Experimental Station to further evaluate the mechanisms by which nanoscale manganese and iron activate photosynthesis and antioxidant production in crops. Findings aim to optimize an effective nano-enabled fertilizer to increase agricultural productivity and global food security in a sustainable manner.
