Specifically, the university will conduct laboratory...
This federal Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program provides $649,894 to The Ohio State University to develop a novel dynamic optimization model of the global forest and agricultural sectors. The project aims to better understand how climate change impacts the future provision of large-scale land-based carbon dioxide removal from the atmosphere. The...
This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) provides $244,018 to the Florida Institute of Technology Inc. (Florida TECH) to develop a novel hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) technology that efficiently recovers nutrients from animal manure. The project aims to produce liquid fertilizer and engineered carbon materials from this process, which could help alleviate environmental, health, and economic burdens associated with improper...
This $749,846 Project Grant was awarded on August 1, 2023 by the Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310). The goal of this project is to quantify the effects of carbon allocation to different plant tissues, symbionts and exudates on its turnaround and resilience in the ecosystem. The key products and services to be delivered include: (1) validating estimates of carbon...
The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Washington State University a $750,000 Project Grant under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program (AFRI, CFDA No. 10.310). The grant will fund the development of a novel in-situ anaerobic digestion stripping evaporation system to produce clean water and value-added products from dairy manure wastewater. Over a three-year period, the university will develop a bench-scale system,...
This $225,000 federal Project Grant award, provided by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310), aims to develop an innovative solution for improving soil health, fertility, and drought resilience in semiarid agricultural regions. The research project at Utah State University will investigate how applying biochar enriched with animal manures can enhance soil nutrient dynamics, particularly phosphorus availability, and...
Oregon State University received a $749,977 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) competitive grants program. The grant will fund development of a novel hybrid electrodialysis-forward osmosis process to concurrently recover nutrients and clean water from liquid digestate for safe crop irrigation and production. Key activities to be undertaken include comprehensive...
The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) awarded a $618,841 Project Grant to Texas A&M Agrilife Research under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) competitive grants program (CFDA 10.310). The grant aims to harness ecosystem services to improve agricultural sustainability, productivity and economic viability. Specifically, the grantee will use probiotics to enhance the conversion of dairy manure by black soldier flies into protein that...
This $800,000 project grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program will support research to advance understanding of two novel systems that integrate circular nutrient economies and ecological nutrient management practices on farms. The key objectives of the 4-year project are to: Determine how adaptive multi-paddock grazing of cover crops affects soil nitrogen...
This $800,000 Project Grant awarded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program, will develop a robust and scalable processing platform for converting food waste into high surface area carbon materials for use in supercapacitors. The project will apply a hydrothermal carbonization method to capture the organic carbon from food waste, and then thermochemically activate the resulting hydrochar to produce high...
The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) within the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) awarded a $799,996 Project Grant to The Ohio State University under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) competitive grants program (CFDA #10.310).
The three-year project aims to develop a decision support framework to aid stakeholders in choosing appropriate animal waste management practices. Researchers will compare untreated animal waste to waste treated with hydrothermal carbonization, optimizing process conditions to produce hydrochar for use as a soil amendment. They will assess nutrient availability, balances, and use efficiency at multiple scales and conduct techno-economic and life cycle analyses to estimate costs and environmental impacts of conventional and proposed approaches. A portion of the $799,996 in funding was provided as a sub-award of $TBD to the Florida Institute of Technology to conduct hydrothermal carbonization experiments on individual and mixed animal wastes to generate hydrochars and nutrient balance data for further analyses under the project objectives.
