Project Grant 20236701739865
- This Project Grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) provides $120,000 to The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) to systematically evaluate novel non-BPA food can coatings using advanced materials characterization techniques. The goal is to elucidate interactions between food constituents and these novel coatings, develop accelerated screening methods, assess coating-food compatibility,...
- This Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310) provides $752,000.00 to fund a collaborative effort between Clemson University and North Carolina Central University (NCCU) to develop a novel antimicrobial food packaging technology. The project aims to create paint-like coating formulations containing food-safe carbon particles...
- This Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310), provides $225,000.00 to Iowa State University of Science and Technology to develop new biodegradable coatings derived from glycerin, a waste product of biodiesel production, for use in food packaging. The project aims to create high-performance, moisture and gas barrier coatings that can be applied...
- This $727,987 Project Grant award from the Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) aims to develop low-cost, robust antimicrobial packaging films using single atom catalysts (SACs) that mimic natural enzymes to catalyze the disinfection of microorganisms via oxidation. The key objectives are to: 1) synthesize and evaluate SACs with high oxidase-catalytic activity and antimicrobial properties, 2)...
- Cornell University received a $783,000 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) federal grant program. The award period is from May 1, 2023 to April 30, 2026. Through this funding, Cornell University will examine the impact of micronutrient-fortified salt on anemia and other health outcomes in children, as well as use metabolomics to study the mechanisms by which...
- This $180,000 project grant awarded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) supports research to immobilize the PETase enzyme onto activated charcoal to enhance its stability and reusability for the degradation of microplastics in water treatment systems. The key objectives are to optimize immobilization conditions and demonstrate the effectiveness of the immobilized PETase in degrading microplastics in...
- Cornell University was awarded a $180,000 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The grant will fund research from June 1, 2023 through May 31, 2026 to investigate eavesdropping behavior between two major agricultural insect pests, Acalymma tristis and Acalymma vittatum, that damage cucurbit crops. The research goals will be pursued through laboratory and field...
- This $299,949 Project Grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program aims to develop sustainable, biodegradable food packaging alternatives to replace plastic. The University of Wisconsin-Madison will conduct research to characterize the effects of naturally-occurring bioplasticizers on protein film properties and identify how solvents and thermal processing impact protein...
- Cornell University was awarded a $635,769 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program. The three-year grant will fund research to evaluate relationships between dietary iron sources, the gut microbiome, and iron absorption in humans. Using shotgun metagenomics and stable isotope technology, the researchers will study gut microbiome profiles and how they...
- The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Cornell University a $180,000 Project Grant under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) federal grant program. The three-year award will fund research to understand the interplay between provitamin A and starch metabolism in cassava plants. The goal is to provide breeding strategies to international cassava programs to develop varieties that are both nutritionally enriched with provitamin A and...
The National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Cornell University a $597,000 Project Grant under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program to develop innovative packaging technologies that increase the sustainability of single-use beverage containers. Through this four-year award ending April 2027, Cornell will evaluate approved food additives for their ability to inhibit aluminum can corrosion across multiple liner types and beverages. The university will also develop and characterize novel active anticorrosive can liners incorporating approved food ingredients into the liner composition. Cornell will assess the suitability of accelerated methods to predict the impact of anticorrosive additives or liners on beverage shelf-life. By facilitating the transition of more beverages to less resource-intensive aluminum packaging with extended shelf-life while preserving quality, this research supports AFRI program goals of developing technologies that improve food quality, efficiency, and reduce waste.
