Project Grant 20236701340042
- The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture has awarded a $499,998.00 Project Grant to the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310). The long-term goal of this 4-year project is to develop and publicly release two new dry bean cultivars adapted to Michigan and the Upper Midwest, one each from the black and navy bean market classes. The project will utilize genomic prediction strategies to...
- This $968,991 Project Grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Integrated Programs (CFDA 10.303) aims to enhance the agronomic and end-use quality traits of organic dry beans through plant breeding and develop value-added bean products using sustainable processing and packaging. The key products and services to be delivered include: Breeding improved organic dry bean varieties focused on enhancing seedling vigor, harvestability, and overall quality for both...
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) awarded a $225,000 Project Grant under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310) to North Carolina State University to investigate disease resistance in populations of maize landraces and teosinte, the wild relative of maize. The project aims to describe genetic variation for disease resistance, perform genome-wide association analysis to identify resistance alleles, measure resistance components, and analyze the...
- This $180,000 Project Grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310). The overall goal of this 3-year project is to identify genes related to vein initiation and spacing in the leaves of corn. To achieve this, the project will use three approaches: a genome-wide association study to associate vein density measurements with genetic variation,...
- The University of Illinois will receive $437,565 under a Cooperative Agreement awarded by the United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service to implement genomic selection in a rapid cycling breeding program and develop triple cross hybrids suited for organic seed production. The objective is to breed corn varieties that enable organic seed production. This work will be carried out from March 2021 through July 2024 under the Agricultural Research Service's Agricultural...
- This $649,996 federal Project Grant was awarded on July 1, 2024 by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310). The funding supports research by the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Northeast Area to develop novel strategies for improving tomato fruit yield and quality. The key objectives are: 1) generating OR gene mutations to examine effects on tomato fruit set and yield; 2) elucidating how the OR gene...
- This federal Project Grant award of $225,000 was provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310). The funding will support research at North Carolina State University to investigate how the genetic makeup of maize and its wild relatives like teosinte and sorghum influences their microbiomes and ability to adapt to environmental stresses like heat and nutrient...
- The Agricultural Research Service was awarded a $3.9 million Project Grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Specialty Crop Research Initiative program. The four-year grant aims to apply advanced phenotypic and genomic tools to improve flavor, nutrition, and production traits in carrot. The Specialty Crop Research Initiative program addresses critical needs of the specialty crop industry through research and extension grants that help tackle challenges of national,...
- The Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service awarded a $727,606 cooperative agreement to Iowa State University of Science and Technology from March 15, 2021 to July 31, 2024 under the Agricultural Research Basic and Applied Research program (CFDA 10.001). The award will support Iowa State University's efforts to develop a rapid cycling breeding program to produce maize varieties suited for organic seed production. Specifically, the university will breed corn to enable organic seed...
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) has awarded a $650,000 project grant to the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center to conduct multi-year trials on 12 cover crop species integrated with corn production. The research aims to gain an improved understanding of the variation in root traits across diverse cover crop species and their influence on soil and cash crops. The project will leverage advanced root phenomics, sensing technologies, and...
The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) was awarded a $649,402 Project Grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) federal grant program. Through this award, ARS will conduct research on over 1,000 heirloom corn varieties maintained in the USDA National Plant Germplasm System. The research has three major goals: comprehensively analyze the genetic diversity and relationships of U.S. heirloom corn varieties; identify genes controlling agronomic traits and productivity in various field conditions; and evaluate yield potential of promising heirloom varieties. Ultimately, the research aims to improve understanding of local and regional adaptation of heirloom corns while making these varieties more available and profitable for small-scale American farmers through breeding for improved production, taste, aroma and nutrition. The award period is from September 15, 2023 through September 14, 2026 and will be performed by ARS in Peoria, Illinois.
