Project Grant 20236701140351
- This $300,000 Project Grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The grant supports research aimed at mitigating the effects of high sodium intake on cardiovascular health, with a focus on evaluating the potential of dietary potassium to offset sodium-induced endothelial dysfunction - a precursor to atherosclerosis. The research will be conducted by Florida...
- This federal Project Grant award, valued at $649,753.00, was provided by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310). The grant supports research at North Carolina State University (NC State) to investigate the relationship between the chlorogenic acid content of blueberries and their ability to lower trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) levels and prevent atherosclerosis. The key products and services to...
- This $800,000 Project Grant awarded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program is funding a comprehensive study on the therapeutic potential of polyphenol-rich haskap berries. The key products and services to be delivered under this grant include: 1) determining the impact of haskap berries on the gut microbiome and metabolome, 2) assessing how gut microbiome composition and bioactive metabolites produced from...
- This Project Grant award of $297,000.00 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) will support research at Tuskegee University to investigate the potential health benefits of blueberry polyphenols in preventing metabolic syndrome-induced diabetes. The project aims to process whole blueberries into freeze-dried powders, analyze their polyphenolic content and anti-oxidant/hypoglycemic properties, and then formulate them into feed diets for a...
- This $300,000 federal Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program will support research at the University of Georgia Research Foundation (UGA Research Foundation) to increase the economic sustainability of blueberry fields in the southeastern United States. The project aims to examine the impacts of selective pruning techniques on the commercial life, fruit production, and quality of blueberry crops in the...
- The University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. (UGA Research Foundation) was awarded a $299,941 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on January 15, 2025. The grant will fund a 1-year project to examine the effectiveness of horticultural recovery practices and the application of humic substances to enhance the root growth of blueberry plants following hurricane damage. The project aims to accelerate the recovery...
- The University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. was awarded a $596,050 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program. The grant will fund research from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2025 to understand the effect of dynamic gastrointestinal conditions and food matrices on the transit, release, mucoadhesion, and survival of microencapsulated probiotic...
- This $300,000 Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) project grant, awarded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (CFDA 10.310), aims to measure the effects of plant growth regulator (PGR) treatments on the volatile chemistry, sugar, and anthocyanin content of strawberries and blueberries. The project has three key objectives: 1) evaluate how three PGR treatments impact flavor volatiles, sugars, and anthocyanins; 2) elucidate the underlying mechanisms by measuring the...
- This $1,046,444 Project Grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) program. The award is funding research and educational activities to: Evaluate the interactions between microbial composition, macromolecular polyphenols, and metabolic signatures related to obesity and chronic disease prevention. This includes both anaerobic fermentation studies and an animal model. Evaluate...
- The University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. (UGA Research Foundation) was awarded a $179,304 Project Grant under the USDA's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program to conduct research on the agroecological consequences of surplus phosphorus in agricultural systems. The project has two primary objectives: 1) conducting manipulative field experiments on collaborating farms to measure the effects of high versus low phosphorus levels on predation of insect herbivores, and...
The Georgia State University Research Foundation Inc. was awarded a $180,000 project grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) federal grant program (CFDA #10.310). The grant will fund research from June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2026 to investigate whether a berry-rich diet can preserve intestinal barrier function and prevent the onset of hypertension using a preclinical rat model. Researchers will feed rats diets with or without berries and induce hypertension using angiotensin II to measure markers of intestinal barrier function and blood pressure over time. Additional cell culture studies and protein expression analysis will explore the mechanisms by which berries may exert protective effects related to intestinal integrity, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Results will be disseminated through conferences, community speaking engagements, and peer-reviewed journal publications. The research aims to further understanding of the relationship between intestinal barrier dysfunction and hypertension development, identifying a novel early target for prevention to inform scientists, healthcare providers and dietitians.
