The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) awarded a $200,000 Project Grant under the Tribal Colleges Extension Program (TCEP) to Little Big Horn Community College (LBHC) on September 25, 2023. The TCEP provides funding to 1994 Land-Grant Institutions like LBHC to deliver culturally relevant, informal education programs addressing community needs in areas such as agriculture, natural resources, economic development, youth development, and health promotion. This TCEP Project Grant will enable LBHC, a Tribally Owned and American Indian-serving educational institution located on the Crow Reservation in Montana, to implement the "Apsaalooke Healing Families Project." The project aims to provide holistic healing services and culturally-based practices to address historical trauma, health disparities, and broken families on the reservation through an integrated, family-focused approach. Key activities will likely include community gardening initiatives, youth leadership programs, workshops on indigenous food systems and nutrition education, and the promotion of traditional ecological knowledge to improve quality of life for the tribal community.
