Nanosur LLC, a minority-owned biotechnology company, received a $649,999 project grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture's (NIFA) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) / Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program to develop RNA interference (RNAi)-based insecticides for controlling invasive insect pests in agriculture and forests. The grant, awarded on September 1, 2023, supports Nanosur's work to create selective, affordable, safe and effective RNAi-based insecticides that target damaging pests such as the European spongy moth and the Asian spongy moth, while avoiding harm to non-target organisms like the monarch butterfly. The project leverages Nanosur's prior research funded by the National Science Foundation and USDA, in collaboration with the Beltsville USDA Agricultural Research Station, to deliver a commercial-ready RNAi insecticide formulation for large-scale field testing and deployment to control these invasive lepidopteran pests.
